A lithium battery can look perfectly ordinary right up until it fails. A power tool left charging in the shed, an e-bike battery on a hallway floor or a damaged battery pack in a work ute can turn from a convenience into a fast-moving fire with little warning. Battery fire prevention is therefore not just about buying safer equipment. It is about where batteries are kept, how they are charged, what condition they are in and whether a small fire can be dealt with before it takes hold.

For Australian homes and businesses, the risk is growing with every cordless tool, mobile device, e-bike, scooter, solar storage system and battery-powered machine brought into service. Batteries are useful. They are also energy-dense, which means poor charging habits, physical damage and unsuitable equipment can have serious consequences.

Battery fire prevention starts at the charging point

Charging is where many avoidable incidents begin. Batteries generate heat as they charge. If that heat cannot escape, if the charger is unsuitable or if a battery is already compromised, risk rises quickly.

Charge batteries on a hard, stable, non-combustible surface wherever practical. Keep them clear of paper, cardboard, bedding, curtains, fuel, paint, sawdust and other materials that can help a small fire spread. A concrete floor, clear bench or purpose-designed charging area is far safer than a lounge chair, bed, vehicle seat or cluttered workbench.

Use the charger supplied or approved by the manufacturer. Cheap, mismatched or damaged chargers may deliver the wrong voltage or current. This is especially relevant for e-bikes, scooters, power tools and replacement battery packs, where non-genuine components can appear compatible but lack the same protection systems.

Storage is part of the safety system

Store spare batteries in a cool, dry place, away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Prevent terminals from contacting metal objects such as loose tools, keys, screws or other batteries. Keep battery quantities sensible for the space. A small office cupboard filled with charging devices, spare packs and packaging creates a concentrated fire load. On boats and in vehicles, secure batteries against movement and vibration. A battery that shifts, rubs against a sharp edge or becomes wet has a higher chance of damage. Inspect connections, cables and housings as part of routine maintenance, especially after rough travel, heavy rain or a collision.

Put protection where a fire is likely to start

Good battery fire prevention does not assume someone will always be standing nearby with the knowledge and confidence to use a conventional extinguisher. Fires often begin in garages, sheds, engine bays, plant rooms, workshops and charging areas - places that may be unattended or difficult to approach safely once flames build.

Fire protection should be selected for the specific hazard, the size of the space and the likely first fuel to ignite.
